Welcome to Puppy Life Skills.
Reward based training is a scientifically, proven, gentle and humane method of learning that rewards our dog the moment they do something right. All dogs respond to attention and once rewarded for their behaviour they will repeat that behaviour. We are reinforcing the desired behaviour , setting our dog up to succeed. Positive reinforcement training involves ignoring the undesirable behaviours. When these undesirable behaviours are ignored and not rewarded in any way, these behaviours gradually disappear. Reward based training is fun, and positively enhances our relationship with our dog. It works and, personally I have had results I never had when using forced based methods many, many years ago. When we first start to train our puppy or dog using reward based training, the reward can be anything the dog desires, such as food or a toy but food is generally the best type of reward to use when teaching a new behaviour. Most dogs respond readily to treats. As our puppy or dog learns to complete the behaviour reliably, the food is gradually replaced with a toy, a game of tug, a walk… this is called a life reward.
